Stop Trying To Make Good Decisions

I went on a serious three mile hike this week. It doesn’t sound amazing but I couldn’t do that a year ago. A year ago I couldn’t walk around the block.

Sometimes I stop to consider how I got here. If that one horrible thing hadn’t happened then that other thing wouldn’t have happened and then that amazing thing wouldn’t have happened and I wouldn’t be where I am today. But then I wonder, is this such an awesome place to be? It’s better than where I was but maybe I would be even better off if I had made completely different choices.

You know what? It doesn’t really matter.

Someone asked me the other day if staying in college was a good idea or if they would be better off dropping out and traveling the world. I told him…

You know what? It doesn’t really matter.

Amazing people make their lives amazing no matter what. Some people have a way of making things beautiful and some people have a way of turning everything into garbage. What kind of person are you?

It’s not the big decisions that make a difference in our lives. It’s all the tiny little decisions that add up to something big.

Do you make your bed every day? Not that it matters.

Do you put your keys away in the same place every time? Big deal.

Do you get enough sleep? You can get by without it.

Do you tell the people you love good morning? They’ll probably still be there tomorrow if you forget.

None of these things matter.

By themselves.

But they all make a world of difference when you have a habit of doing all of them, every single day.

It doesn’t really matter if you go to that good school or the other or if you marry that nice guy or the other or if you take this dream job or the other.

It’s not about the decisions you make. It’s about the habits you create.

If you are in the habit of having great relationships then it doesn’t matter who you marry. You will have a great marriage.

If you are in the habit of learning then it doesn’t matter what university you go to. You will get a great education.

If you are in the habit of working hard then it doesn’t matter what job you take. You will succeed.

If you don’t have good habits then stop everything and get some. Don’t marry that guy, don’t go to that college and don’t chase that dream job, because it won’t get you anything but further in debt and further away from what you really want.

Slow down and make your bed. Put your keys away. Get some sleep. Tell her good morning.
